Choosing The Right Toys For Your Dog

There are lots of things to consider when choosing the right toys for your dog. One of them is the breed and size of your dog.

If you have a huge and aggressive dog, then you need to get dog toys that are also big like Frisbees and sturdy balls. Avoid using small balls on big dogs because they might end up choking on that. For tiny and fragile dogs, make sure to use small dog toys that are usually made of soft materials so that your dog won’t break their teeth such as mini floppy barbell and squeaky chains from Petstages.

Dog toys to suit the lifestyle of your dog

Knowing the lifestyle of your dog would help you choose the right toys for your dog. If your dog is active and likes to run a lot, then using a Frisbee or throwing a ball would do the trick. If your dog loves to chew a lot, then you can use a chew ring or different kinds of teether for dogs so that they can chew as much as they want without harming their teeth. If your dog gets easily bored, then you can give your dog a toy box, which is filled with assorted toys so that they can bury their heads inside the box and choose the toy that they want to play.

Some Problems With Having Doggie Doors

It’s a common feature in many a dog owner’s home to find their home installed with dog doors. But even long-time dog owners face problems involving their doggie doors. If you’re shopping or know someone who’s shopping for doggy doors, here’s a list of problems related to that (it’s always prudent to know them).

Forgetting to lock the doggy door. Although the goal of having a doggie door is so that you don’t have to keep getting up to let the dog in or out, it is possible to be too lax about this. Say you had to shoulder some extra work in the office, and stayed well after quitting time, that means your dog can still roam free (no one will safely lock the dog door when the dog goes back home from his adventures). Similarly, you could lock the dog door forgetting to check whether the dog came back in. You could just lock your pet outside.

Even automatic dog doors can pose problems. An automatic dog door opens and closes upon sensing a particular device nearby, a device on your dog’s collar. This way, only an animal with the special collar the door senses can activate the door’s opening and closing. This is well and good, but when the batteries on the collar run out and the dog is outside, that’s a problem. It may not be able o get back inside. If you happen to have a room that’s out of barking range – you might not hear the dog barking for help outside your house. That’s not a situation you should let your experience. Also, in some instances, your dog can bring home its fellow dog. This can happen when the friend-dog follows too closely when your dog enters the dog door.

The height of the dog door. Some owners have several dogs, and of varying sizes at that – such as a combination of small and medium sized dogs; if you have this combination and you got the right door height size, at least the bigger dogs won’t be able to get in. Dogs are resourceful creatures, and can squeeze through openings as long as they crouch and crawl though. Even when the dog has grown in size, that problem remains. But if the dog door’s height remained the same despite the growth spurt, you can imagine the consequences. The outcome could range from a slight inconvenience for dogs who use the doors, to injuries the dog could get being forced to use a door it has outgrown.

Lack of insulation – loss of heat or cold. If you own several dogs, that could several dogs going in and out the house in close sequence. For dog owners whose residence is in cold climate areas, the heat loss can find its way into their monthly energy bills. If you live in a house that’s air-conditioned, the same energy loss can happen. Consider the leakage and its consequences for you, and not just the convenience afforded by the dog door.
