What is the difference between and Ipod and an MP3 player?

I can eliminate the need for the CD with an MP3 player? An iPod is just a apple brand, or if I wanted a dock with speakers or use it in my car is not there it's the iPod? I'm looking at eBay and kind of lost. I do not want to spend a fortune but I'd just switch to digital music and be able to use it anywhere. And I get music off my PC and onto the MP3 player? I suppose that's how that works.

Apple iPod is a brand name. It has a unique interface. Some automotive players have specific iPod interface. Many also have a mini jack input to accept the headphone output from any generic mp3 player. Some have USB inputs that let you play music from a flash drive. Any player new enough to have any of the above will also play mp3 files from a CD. A 700MB CD will hold 150 or so songs in mp3 format, as opposed to the 10-20 you get CD compressed format. I do not have an iPod, but some time ago I converted all my cd's in mp3 format on my computer, as well as many my tapes and LP's. All things are now in boxes in the back room of my basement. Everything gets played direct from my computer, or dragged and dropped my mp3 player or a disc for vehicular use Edit. === Yes, you just treat your player like a flash drive. Drag and drop things from computer to player and vice versa. It may get a little more complicated if you buy music on line with digital rights management enabled. If you will only rip music from CD's you already own, you can treat the mp3 files such as photos, documents, pdf's or any other file.
