Best Christmas Gifts Ideas For Kids

best christmas gifts ideas for kids
Need Christmas gift help for a baby/new parents…. ideas?

Our friends recently had a baby, I want to say Sept 7. She was 2.5 weeks early, so she is just a tad behind in the development stages that are normal for a baby this age. I haven’t seen her in a couple weeks, but her mom says she is starting to coo and bat at the toys dangling from her little gym thing…. if that helps you know what stage of development she is in.

I am clueless about babies!

What is the best thing you had/have for your kids at that age or a little older? We are torn between getting them a group baby related gift, or getting a baby gift and then some sort of food/treat type gift basket for the parents. When she was born we gave a gift basket (doubles as diaper storage) that had some general things like pacifiers, ointments, gas relief, blanket, sheet, couple plushie toys, etc… so I don’t really want to do that again.

I just had a baby on September 20th, making them somewhat close in age. So I’ve got a few ideas!

Babies are supposed to have “tummy time” every day… which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like… you put the baby on their stomach. This is supposed to help twith developing their muscles, lifting their heads, etc. So perhaps a tummy play pad. They usually come with a boppy type pillow thing for under their chest and some attached toys to keep their attention. Here is an example of one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2574115

I think that would make an excellent gift because it’s really practical, yet fun. Though if you do get one, it would probably be cheaper at somewhere other than babies r us. lol. They sell them at target and wal mart too.

They also make activity centers that can be placed over the crib or gym type things…… anything with toys that dangle is good. They can play while lying down and may even entertain themelves for awhile if the parents have to do something.

Really as far as toys go, anything with bright colors. Babies around that age have started to be able to see colors better and are fascinated by them. And anything that talks or makes sound… that’s how babies learn to talk too!

Otherwise, I think savings bonds are a good idea. Or what I really wish people would buy me are diapers and wipes! lol. My son has sooo much clothes… so while they are cute… lots of people get them as gifts. Sometimes the more practical things are what the parents really need the most!

As far as the parents go… a good gift for them could be a gift certificate to a restaurant or movie theater and an offer to babysit while they go out to eat/see a movie. It’s really hard to do simple things like that once you have a little one and I think they would definitely appreciate that! Oooh or for a cozy night in for them, buy a dvd or 2 and make a movie basket filled with popcorn, candy, soda, whatever.

If you want to keep it baby-related… perhaps a scrapbook and a couple disposable cameras if they don’t have a digital one. I go picture crazy with my on and have actually been meaning to get a scrapbook myself! lol

Well those are my thoughts!
Hope I was able to help!
Good luck and happy shopping! =)

The hot new toy for the Christmas shopping season turns out to be a doll called Buzzsaw Louie. One Buzzsaw Louie doll, however, isn’t so sure he enjoys shoppers fighting over him, and he wanders off on his own. He meets up with two members of the Veggie Tales gang, Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, and together they learn a valuable lesson about the true meaning of the holiday season. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Veggie Tales: The Star of Christmas Veggie Tales is an animated kid’s video series with a Christian message from Big Ideas. In “The Star of Christmas,” Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber star as Dickensian characters Cavis Appythart and Millward Phelps. Learn about the early days of the holiday celebration, from the pagan festivals of Roman times to Prince Albert and the early beginnings of the Christmas tree in 1841 England. Find out how St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, evolved into Santa Claus by the British in the New World. Filled with both religious and secular traditions of the Western world, this documentary follows the history of the Christmas season through time and through all types of worldwide customs. ~ Cecilia Cygnar, Rovi Biography: Santa Claus This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the history and myth surrounding Santa Claus. St. Nicholas was superseded in much of Europe by Christkindlein, the Christ child, who delivered gifts in secret to the children. He traveled with a dwarf-like helper called Pelznickel (a.k.a. Belsnickle) or with St. Nicholas-like figures. Eventually, all three were combined into the image that we now know as Santa Claus. “Christkindlein” became Kriss Kringle. This video also includes commentary on the importance of Santa as a Christmas figure and the possibilities of a real-life St. Nicholas existing in history. ~ John Patrick Sheehan, Rovi Weird U.S.: It’s a Wonderful Time to Be Weird As co-hosted by Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran, the television documentary series Weird U.S. leads the audience on a cross-country tour of some of the weirdest and most eccentric happenings in the United States. The episode “It’s a Wonderful Time to Be Weird” (its title a play on the song “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”) features a Christmas theme, and finds Sceurman and Moran profiling such subjects as NASA Santa-trackers, Midwestern Scandinavians who enjoy lutefisk (lye-marinated whitefish) for Christmas dinner, an undercover jaunt in the disguise of “Belsnickles” (Santa’s nasty opposite) and an extreme evangelical radio host who perceives Santa as Satanic and argues that old St. Nick must be stopped. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi Modern Marvels: Christmas Tech This special episode of the History Channel series Modern Marvels eschews antiquated, Victorian Era images of Christmas for a look at some of the contemporary innovations that continue to define the yuletide season across America. The program first leads viewers to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of that establishment’s legendary Christmas tree preparations, then treks off to Macy’s to examine exactly what goes into the design and implementation of that department store’s iconic Christmas widows. A few innocent women experience a nightmare before Christmas in this bloody thriller. Billy Lenz, a severely maladjusted child, finally snaps under years of brutal treatment by his family, killing and eating them in an explosion of violence on Christmas Eve. For years, the Lenz house stands vacant, but in time it’s purchased and renovated as the new home for a college sorority. A few days before Christmas, a handful of sorority sisters — Dana (Lacey Chabert), Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg), Kelli (Katie Cassidy), and Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) — are enjoying a quiet evening with their house mother, Barbara MacHenry (Andrea Martin), exchanging gifts and swapping stories before heading home for holiday break. While Barbara remembers the story of Billy’s crimes, the atmosphere is peaceful until the young women receive the first in a series of disturbing telephone calls. Before long, they learn that Billy has escaped after years in a mental institution, and has come back to the house where he grew up to once again spill blood for the Christmas season. Black Christmas is a remake of the 1974 horror film of the same name by director Bob Clark, who later made a less-threatening film about the Yuletide season, A Christmas Story; Andrea Martin, who plays the house mother, also appeared in the 1974 film as one of the sorority girls. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Christmas Eve is drawing near, and when the Plaza’s most famous six-year-old vows to put on the best holiday show ever a last minute cancellation threatens to sink the elaborate holiday celebration in an animated tale that offers holiday fun for the whole family. A variety of traditions from various cultures promise to make this year’s show the biggest holiday event in Plaza history, but in the ensuing chaos Mr. Salamone is prompted to cancel the show just plans begin falling into place. Now it’s up to Eloise to keep the spirit of Christmas alive, and as the kids scramble to save the show and Eloise ponders whether her surprise guest will truly show up, everyone is about to learn the most important holiday lesson of all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Charlie Brown Christmas -

Charlie Brown Christmas -

$14.99

Includes:A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) It’s Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown (1992) A Charlie Brown Christmas As incredible as it seems, CBS head man James Aubrey originally vetoed his network’s presentation of the animated A Charlie Brown Christmas on the grounds that Charles M. Schultz’s round-headed protagonist was a “loser” who wouldn’t attract an audience! The story proposes that Charlie Brown is convinced that the true meaning of Christmas has been forgotten by his Peanuts friends, not to mention the rest of the world. “Psychiatrist” Lucy advises Charlie Brown to get into the holiday spirit by directing the kids’ upcoming Christmas play. Despite his utter lack of control over his cast, Charlie Brown takes his job seriously, even setting out to find a genuine Christmas tree to decorate the set instead of the usual aluminum job. But Charlie Brown’s tree is a scrawny, pathetic thing, and all seems lost. That is, until the rest of the Peanuts gang decide to pitch in and decorate the woebegone tree. An instant hit when first telecast December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been rebroadcast virtually every year since. It was produced by Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, the latter providing the squeals and growls of Charlie Brown’s hyper-intelligent dog, Snoopy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi It’s Christmas Time Again, Charlie Brown It’s Christmas time again for the whole Peanuts gang. This time around, Sally is all nerves over the upcoming school play where she has to deliver one line, while Peppermint Patty is despondent over being cast as a sheep…again. Meanwhile, Charlie Brown tries to scrounge up enough money to buy that Red-Headed girl a pair of gloves. ~ Rovi

One Special Night/The Christmas Clause/Christmas in the Clouds -

$12.99

Includes:One Special Night (1999), MPAA Rating: PG Christmas in the Clouds (2001), MPAA Rating: PG The Christmas Clause (2008) One Special Night Originally aired on CBS, the made-for-TV holiday romance One Special Night brings together James Garner and Julie Andrews for their third feature together, after The Americanization of Emily and Victor/Victoria. Robert (Garner) visits his wife in the hospital, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. There he meets the stern Catherine (Andrews), a widowed pediatrician who spends her downtime visiting the room in the hospital where her husband died a year ago. In the middle of a raging snowstorm on Thanksgiving, Catherine offers Robert a ride and they get stuck in the snow. Taking refuge in an empty cabin, the couple get over their initial personality conflicts to engage in a meaningful dialogue. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi Christmas in the Clouds Ray (Tim Vahle) has just returned from college to run a Native-American ski lodge. A laid-back place where employees’ children play in the lobby and the handyman has a habit of macking on guests, the lodge isn’t exactly four-star travel guide material. So when Ray learns that a travel guide representative is coming to make an inspection, he makes an executive decision to make the lodge a professional place of business. In addition to keeping his father, who happens to be the hotel’s former manager, out of his way, he also has to contend with his somewhat eccentric staff, which includes an emotional vegetarian chef (Graham Greene) who takes a certain pleasure in informing his diners of the names he has given the animals they’re eating. Despite Ray’s exhaustive preparations, something, of course, goes wrong: something that, in this case, turns out to be a case of mistaken identity: when Tina, a comely Mohawk woman, shows up at the lodge, Ray assumes her to be the representative, and sets about giving her the royal treatment while the actual representative (M. Emmet Walsh) is ignored and must contend with a hefty dose of hotel mismanagement. Christmas in the Clouds was an audience favorite at the 2002 Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi The Christmas Clause A stressed-out mother makes a Christmas wish for a different life, only to realize that the sweet life doesn’t come without its fair share of cavities in this uplifting holiday fantasy starring Lea Thompson. Between maintaining her career as a high-powered lawyer, tending to her three kids, and maintaining her relationship with her loving husband, Sophie Kelly (Thompson) never has a spare minute to herself. When Sophie takes her kids to the mall and Santa asks her what she wants for Christmas, she impulsively wishes for a new life. Subsequently transformed into a successful, single attorney who heads up her own firm, Sophie discovers that not even the advances of a handsome young bachelor can make her forget the time she shared with her beloved family. And come Christmas Day, Sophie

Santa finds himself in serious trouble when Rusty Reindeer leaves the North Pole in order to do some soul searching in the big city, and a malfunctioning “Nice ‘N Naughty O’Matic” leaves him unable to distinguish the good kids from the bad in this animated adventure for the entire family. Rusty Reindeer is having a personal crisis, and now he’s hoping to find his true role in Christmas by venturing into the city and joining a support group for holiday icons. Meanwhile, as Rusty is trading stories with Albert the Thanksgiving turkey and Mr. C the ornery cupid, Santa’s “Nice ‘N Naughty O’Matic” goes on the fritz. Now a young boy who should have been on the good list has been mistakenly shifted to the bad, and in order to ensure that the child has a good Christmas Rusty will enlist the aid of moody Halloween ghosts Trick and Treat. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Includes:Biography: Santa Claus Biography: Santa Claus This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the history and myth surrounding Santa Claus. ~ John Patrick Sheehan, Rovi

The Man Who Saved Christmas – Widescreen

Jason Alexander stars as fabled toy manufacturer, A.C. Gilbert in this Capraesque TV movie. An overachiever since his school days, Gilbert surprises his stern father (Ed Asner) by forsaking a career in medicine to pursue an entirely different business. Creating the now legendary Erector Set, A.C. sets up his own toy company in 1913, an enterprise which is raking in millions within two years. But with America’s entry into WWI, the U.S. government prevails upon Gilbert to convert his factory into a munitions plant. Though at heart a pacifist, Gilbert agrees to do so, secure in the belief that he will be able to return to toys once the hostilities have ceased. Alas, the Government has other plans. At their behest, Gilbert reluctantly mounts a “Buy Bonds, Not Toys” campaign designed to divert the money normally spent on Christmas gifts to the war effort. Is this the end of Christmastime as millions of children know it, or will Gilbert be able to salvage both the holiday and the spirit of giving? The Man Who Saved Christmas debuted December 15, 2002, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
