Legendary 1965 Recording $14.99 Martha Argerich is a pianist of the highest magnitude. Her performances of Prokofiev, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff are particularly noteworthy. This Chopin disc from 1965 has never been released due to a conflict in Argerich’s recording contracts.Her playing on this CD is remarkable, not just for its technical wizardry, but for her ability to make everything sound so clear and simple. Sure, Argerich’s playing is dazzling–the fourth movement of the B minor Sonata is flawless (and was reportedly recorded in one take!), but it is her understanding of the music and the need to not be flashy that sets her playing apart. Three mazurkas can be heard on the recording, all played with introspection and clarity. In the Scherzo No. 3, Argerich shapes the four-note theme beautifully, alternating it with the cascading note accompaniment. The exciting coda is carefully constructed and slowly builds, culminating in a forceful restatement of the work’s opening octaves. Last on the CD is a resounding performance of the Polonaise No. 6 in A flat, further emphasizing Argerich’s gift to make a popular piece sound fresh and new.
