I grew up a bit differently from most children.  You see, I actually liked some vegetables better than sweets.  I know that might sound a bit strange to most parents.  My preferences might have been related to the reality that my mother kept me on baby foods until I was about twenty-eight.  As I reconsider it, the people at Gerber didn’t produce a pureed version of German chocolate cake.

My candy consumption was also limited.  On Halloween, I would come home from trick or treat, and  my mother and I would sit on the floor sorting my take for the evening.  We would sort them into three piles.  Into one of those piles would go everything that was made by the generous Mrs. Robertson.  Immediately after sorting, that pile went straight into our garbage can.  My mother was sure that Mrs. Robertson let her eighty four cats walk all over the counters in her kitchen at will.  My mother knew this because Mrs. Robertson’s sister-in-law had told her this (both the number of cats and the freedom that those felines were given.)  The pile next to the toxic contributions of Mrs. Robertson was made up of any apples and small boxes of raisins that I had been given.  The apples were always provided by the two dentists who lived in our neighborhood.  That pile was mine.  I was never too sure what happened to the third pile, the one that had candy of every sort imaginable and popcorn balls.  My mother spirited those off to my parents bedroom, and I never saw them again.  My only tastes of candy came when I visited my one pair of grandparents.  (My other grandparents just read me Bible verses all day, and convince me that God was not particularly enthusiastic about any behavior of a typical child.)

In defense of my mother, I believe that this sort of behavior is taught in the top secret motherhood school.  I noticed that when my son was growing up, his mother hid all his candy after Halloween, too.  However my wife has never revealed the exact curriculum of this top secret school.

At twenty-nine, just as I was beginning to learn that meat, vegetables and applesauce do not have identical textures in their natural states, I discovered dessert in the form of a gourmet cheesecake.  Well, I guess it really wasn’t gourmet.  It came from a discount food warehouse, in a flimsy box with a cellophane peep hole that revealed the only attractive portion of the product.  Remember that my taste buds had been accustomed to the miracle recipes of the baby food makers.  To me, the cheesecake was the definition of heaven.

Some years later, as I went through my gastronomical adolescence, my recreational use of foods helped me to realize that cheesecake didn’t really taste like cardboard, as my first experience had led me to believe.  I also discovered that cheesecake can come in a variety of flavors besides blueberry.

Dessert is now my reason for living! My favorite way to complete a nutritious mean of two jars of beef, two jars of mashed peas and a pureed apple with cinnamon is with a turtle cheesecake.  But please don’t tell my mother; she’ll just take it from me.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the foggiest notion of how to go about actually making a cheesecake.  If you have a recipe for one that doesn’t involve using either a mixer or an oven, please let me know.  I do know how to use a blender, though, because I watched my mom prepare the Thanksgiving turkey one year.

Author’s aside:  It’s possible I may have exaggerated just a bit here and there, but don’t mention it to my mom.  She doesn’t have a computer and thinks the Internet is a type of support stocking.  I don’t have to worry about her actually reading this.

Grandma's Wrapped Turkey

Place dressed turnkey, breast up in the middle of the greased, wide,
heavy foil. Bring edges of foil up over breast. Overlap-fold
and press up against the end of the turkey. Place bird in shallow pan.
Open foil last 20 minutes to brown. Bake at 450 F (230 C)
according to the timetable.

8-10 lbs. 2 ¼ – 2 ½ hours.
10 – £ 12. 2 ½ – 3 hours.
14-16 lbs. 3-3 ¼ hours.
18-20 lbs. ¼ 3-3 ½ hours.
22-24 lbs. 3 ½ – 3 hour love.

Turkey

1 whole fresh or thawed turkey (12 -13 pounds.)

1 / 2 cup butter

1 cup mixture of chopped fresh herbs (thyme, tarragon, sage, savory summer, etc.)

Salt and pepper

1 whole peeled onion

Mix butter and herbs and set aside.

Cleaned the turkey inside and out and drain dry.

Use your hand, slide through the skin and the breast meat and thighs until you can. Now with knobs of herbed butter and spread it all over subcutaneous and onto the breasts and thighs. Also rub some butter all out of the skin as well.

Sprinkle salt and pepper and all birds within the cavity. Put the whole onion in the cavity of the bird.

Place the bird in a roasting pan, aluminum needed and put it on a hot barbecue, cooking it using indirect heat. Ensuring BBQ is about 325 -350 degrees in the process of cooking. Adjust the temperature if necessary.

Mix all ingredients together. Put into unbaked tart shells.
Bake at 450 F (230 C) for 8 minutes. Turn down to 350 F,
(175 C), and cook until to brown.

Grandma "s cake

1-cup butter

2 cups all-purpose flour

½ cup sugar

In a large bowl, cream the butter.

Add sugar and cream to creamed butter mixture together.

Slowly mix in 1 ½ cups of flour.

Place mixture in a clean surface and knead the remaining flour.

Spread mixture into an 8 x 8-inch baking pan. Alternatively, you can form into 2 large cookies, each ½ inch thick, and place on a non-stick baking tray. Using a fork, punch holes all over mixture. Bake at 300 ° F for 40-45 minutes.

Beat eggs until thick and lemon colored

Add sugar, nutmeg, and lemon juice

Add ice-cold milk and cream

Beat with beater until foamy engine

Makes: 6 large glasses

Christmas Juice Punch.
2 quarts apple juice.
2 quarts cranberry juice.
8 oz. lemon juice.
8 oz. Sugar.
2 bottles ginger ale.
Combine everything except the ginger ale.
Stir well. Add ginger ale plus chunks of ice before serving.

Blizzard.
3 ounces bourbon.
1 ounce cranberry juice.
1 teaspoon lemon juice.
2 teaspoons of sugar syrup.
4 ounces crushed ice.
Combine in blender until the drink is thick.
Serve straight up.
