Games Publisher THQ Adopts New Logo

In the video game publishing marketplace, the number of players is being whittled down. New channels are opening up (especially digital distribution) and not every publisher has the resources to exploit them. Stability in the sector is in the hands of the first parties, the console makers: Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. But without a decent third-party selection, any console is likely to have a limited lifespan and user-base. Game publishing has seen a trend towards mergers, takeovers and consolidation in the decade. Electronic Arts remain massive, Activision even more so. Square-Enix grew from two Japanese developer-publishers into a single entity that merged with Eidos. And so on. Giants tend not to topple, so people remain concerned mainly about smaller houses like Take Two and THQ. They fight a constant battle though, and THQ is the first to rebrand its  Logo after a rough couple of years. Issues for THQ in recent times included nearly half a billion of lost revenue and several layoffs.

The THQ brand has a built in weakness: it is know solely as an acronym, and it will probably be news to most readers that their name it ‘Toy Head-Quarters’. The association with ‘toys’ is particularly unfortunate for a brand associated with mature franchises like ‘Red Faction’, ‘Saints Row’ and ‘Homefront’. However, with well maintained licenses for Pixar and Nickelodeon titles through their ‘Play THQ’ brand, the name seems somewhat relevant still. Regardless, it’s chop chop time for THQ’s old Custom Logo Design, a italicised digital style monochrome number. The design really screams ‘nineties’ at you basically, and what little brand loyalty exists will weather the changes.

Is the new logo design a step in the right direction? Honestly it looks as ‘of its time’ as the old logo does. Sans serif blocky ‘TH’ in grey with a solid looking curved ‘Q’. Some have suggested that the ‘Q’ is shaped like a question mark, but it’s difficult to tell why this would even be meaningful. The grey of the former is reminiscent of Nintendo’s logo since the middle of the decade. Supposedly it represents ‘the change, innovation and creative growth’ of ‘the new THQ’. It’s hardly awful, but it’s hardly recognisable, which is the last thing any publisher brand needs right now.
