Scared In The Name Of Love
I marvel at the might of a baby to make a full grown man weak at the knees. What on earth rivals the ability of a new pink baby to cause a father or grandfather’s heart to stumble. It is a certainty that unconditional love is best focused through the lenses of a new addition to the family.
Reality started to set in for me when I wandered through the baby shower. I was like a boy at Christmas who gets socks and underwear for a gift. Where the heck are the cars, action figures, and stuff that needs batteries. Trust me, girls baby bedding does not need batteries. Man, babies are really boring and baby shower gifts seem to be more functional than fun.
My eyes surveyed the room. The britax car seat was swamped with torn open paper and ribbons. My wife eased into a stuffed chair next to another pile of colorful boxes. She allowed me one of her patented half-amused smiles. I fell in love with her again that very moment.
Long after my wife went to bed I moved the bedding collections from the table to the couch. I sat in front of the computer with a full heart and clear screen. That is where my emotional record keeping began. It ended when my daughter was born and came home from the hospital and I was officially a father.
I realized that it would someday belong to my daughter. I believe I tried to put some personal philosophy into my words at that point. I am not too profound so I my advice was pretty much centered around the golden rule. I wrote about little things like making sure the doors are locked at night, the burners are off on the stove, and don’t leave water running.
The heavy stuff would fill her life without me discussing it. I hit on the important knowledge. I counseled her on manners, boys, saving for a rainy day and making wise choices. My advice was not too original. It was basically me putting a spin on the lessons I learned from my parents. After all that is where we harvest our best curriculum for life.
It was never a great literary masterpiece or wisdom for the ages. But when I celebrated the one year birthday of my granddaughter I was surprised to see that journal reappear. My daughter and wife were revisiting it. My wife pointed out the one thing I wrote that she said made her cry. The first words are: ‘I am putting pen to paper in the name of love…’
