Toys That Rescued Christmas – Fullscreen $8.99 The Christmas toys have gone missing and it’s up to Smuckey the sock monkey and friends to get them back under the tree in this computer animated holiday adventure for the whole family. As the new toys are placed under the tree, the old toys are saddened by the fact that they will be loved for a day, and then forgotten for the rest of the year. In order to save the new toys from experiencing the emotional turmoil that they themselves felt after being locked in the closet for months on end, the old toys set a trap for the new toys including Smuckey, a friendly train, and a sassy sports car. When the old toys realize that Smuckey and his pals are committed to providing the best Christmas possible to their new owners, they realize that they were wrong to hide them and do their best to help them get back under the tree where they belong. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Toys – Widescreen Subtitle $9.99 Barry Levinson directed this cautionary fantasy fable–a triumph of production design–concerning the clash between benevolent, funny toys and malevolent, violent war toys and video games. Donald O’Connor is the kindly, gentle Kenneth Zevo, founder of Zevo Toys. The workers love him and the love they feel for Zevo comes through in the lovingly cute toys they produce. His son Leslie (Robin Williams) is an eccentric inventor who concentrates on coming up with different styles of plastic vomit and over-sized ears. His addle-headed daughter Alsatia (Joan Cusack) enjoys trying out all of Leslie’s inventions. But their innocent, idyllic existence is soon to be shattered. Kenneth is dying and he is reluctant to bequeath the factory to the immature hands of Leslie and Alsatia. He finally decides to pass on his factory to his three-star general brother (Michael Gambon), reasoning that the general will run the factory efficiently and prod Leslie and Alsatia into adulthood. When Kenneth dies, the general and his army surplus son Patrick (LL Cool J) immediately turn Zevo Toys into an oppressive fascistic environment. The general also stops production of the innocent Zevo products and forces the workers to manufacture violent interactive video games and sadistic war toys. Leslie must rouse himself out of his over-long childhood to preserve the tradition of Zevo Toys. Although Toys did not fare well at the box office, it features a stunning combination of production design by Ferdinando Scarfiotti and art direction by Edward Richardson. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Demonic Toys – Subtitle $12.99 An early, derivative effort from Charles Band’s incredibly prolific direct-to-video outfit Full Moon Productions, this is an undercooked stew of a dozen horror plots, particularly Child’s Play and Night of the Living Dead. A tough lady-cop (Tracy Scoggins) is forced to curtail her task of collaring a pair of sleazy gun-smugglers in an abandoned toy warehouse when the toys suddenly spring to life at the command of a murderous demon-child. While the policewoman tries vainly to organize the hapless humans trapped in the warehouse (pudgy rent-a-cop, transient, chicken delivery boy), the possessed playthings move in for the kill. The silly proceedings are helped along by whirlwind editing, the attractive, butt-kicking Scoggins, and a colorful assortment of monsters — including a fanged jack-in-the-box, a laser-shooting robot, a ferocious teddy bear and the potty-mouthed “Baby Oopsy-Daisy.” Though pretty slick overall, the entire exercise is flattened by the script’s dreadful attempts at humor — particularly from the demon himself, whose stupid Freddy Krueger-isms are like nails on a blackboard. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

Tracy Scoggins returns as tough cop Judith Grey, who must confront the lethal, wise-cracking terror toys again when they reappear at the same defunct warehouse. When the toys’ lecherous leader Baby Oopsy-Daisy kidnaps the diminutive nurse Ginger (reduced to 11 inches by the crazed alien villain of Bad Channels), Judith seeks the aid of Ginger’s similarly-statured boyfriend, Dollman Brick Bardo (Tim Thomerson, a Charles Band fave), to rescue her and fight the mini-monsters on their own turf. Fun on its own merits, especially if viewed as a crossover comic book; indeed, Full Moon Comics has published a “Dollman” series as well. Band also deserves some credit for the sheer audacity of pulling this thing off — given the ludicrous story elements — and for keeping the weirdness zipping along at a brisk pace and breezy one-hour running time. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |
