Small ones can be protected from the cold by dressing them in layers. At night, long thermal underwear can be worn beneath zippered sleepers made of fleece. Sharing a bed with several persons will also help keep everyone warm at night. Dress babies in wool hats, socks and fleece jackets to keep them warm during daylight hours.

SANITATION
During cold temperatures or when water is scarce, there is no need to expect that baths will be a daily occurrence. Select the warmest area you can find and show children how to quickly wash their face, hands, genitals and feet each day. Insure that hands are washed before eating and before meal preparation. As conditions may not be ideal, this precaution is well worth the trouble to maintain everyone’s health. Explain to older children the importance of a well positioned latrine and show them how to dispose of waste well away from living areas.

SKILLS
Learning life skills gives children more confidence in uncertain circumstances. Children will benefit immensely from learning lessons about how to perform CPR, first aid, gardening, swimming, building a camp fire, how to stock a pantry, pitch a tent, shop for supplies, sew and repair small engines. With the experience of knowing how to defend against an attack, what to do during a fire drill or other scenarios, a child will be much more self-assured. A prepared child is also less likely to panic.

When preparedness is made part of your daily living, your children will be better equipped to deal with emergencies. You will have helped insulate them from emotional trauma by preparing them. Strengthen your family today with these measures.
