Plant Spirit Shamanism: Fly Agaric

Some years ago, I was called as an expert witness in a criminal case involving loss Trance and possession. The circumstances of the case is not important in this article but not to leave you hanging, is to make a person more than the UK from Nigeria and was found that carrying cocaine when he was stopped by Customs Officers. His defense was that he was entranced, or possibly drugged, by a group of people who planted cocaine on him before he boarded the plane.

What is more interesting for me was that I got to have lunch with another expert witness, a toxicologist from one of the UK's leading teaching hospitals, a keen interest in mycology and planned to publish a book on the sacred use of fly-agaric (Amanita muscaria) spiritual healing and ancient warriorship practices.

As a result of his study, he recently worked at a TV production company made a documentary on him to try one of his personal pet theories: the Zulu War was fought by indigenous people under intoxication from the sacred mushroom. It is given them, not just superhuman strength and imperviousness to pain, but a sense of fearlessness and their own divine purpose in combat. It is this that has helped leave them in the field of winning, he claimed.

Obviously, the TV company is not another stage of the war to test this theory, but what can they do – And is – is to get two martial arts experts in a ring to fight it for the camera.

The first phase of this experiment, the combatants met uniform and fought a few rounds together. Also not emerged as a clear winner in carefully matched contest.

In the second part, however, one of the warriors were given five strips of fly-agaric to consumers. He was allowed to rest while it took effect, and then both fighters meet again.

Except they are not, exactly. According to the expert I speak to (interestingly, over a lunch of mushroom paella), the fighter who took only fly agaric flew across the ring as soon as the bell rang, probably not even touch the ground, and threw his opponent so hard that she ended up on the floor out well. The drunken fighter never even broke a sweat and was not breathing on anything above normal levels when his opponent is counted out.

Use of and effects of fly agaric,
In the modern West, we have lost most of our ancient ceremonial practices and do not believe in a 'spirit world'. Therefore, fly agaric, (if it is considered at all) is considered only as a dangerous and potentially poisonous 'medicine', rather than a route to divine.

In his book, Ploughing The Clouds, however, Peter Lamborn Wilson argues convincingly that fly agaric, is not only determined the holy Sōma RG Veda, but has been used in many European countries and is also central to Irish Celtic tradition of Shamanism, which still form its core, now.

The mushrooms themselves, bright red with white spots, are gathered for ritual use in the tradition during the hottest months of the year – July and August – when they are most infused the elements of fire and the breath of the day / Sky Father. The most powerful mushrooms, in fact, is said to dry themselves, ready to be selected for their commune people. These are considered far 'strong' in select early and dried artificially. Smaller mushrooms are also said to have greater power than the larger, and it seems likely that, from modern experimentation, their narcotic effect is certainly more intense during the early growing.

For non-ritual use, the mushrooms are used in much the same way as in the Peruvian Andes coca leaves, to create a gentle shift in consciousness, accompanied by mild euphoria and increased energy. In this usage, the mushrooms are just pieces in a ball and swallowed whole, without chewing. A larger mushroom (3-4cm) or 2-3 small ones are enough.

For ritual prescribed use, however, some mushrooms are normally consumed, usually in a set, or sets, three. "The RG Veda Sōma always speaks in sets of three cups and, in Siberia now, three Amanitas is still considered the proper dosage ritual," says Wilson.

An elaborate ceremony often includes the ritual consumption of 'magic mushrooms'. It may take the form of a 'witch' for mushrooms, followed by the 'murder' of his spirit by symbolically attacking it with spears, clubs, or arrow, so it is 'made safe' for human ingestion. It then prepared a time-honored method which is designed to honor all stages of power, avoid his anger and, same time, gain control of its spiritual strength. Only then the mushrooms eaten, under the highly integrated, sacred conditions, and a Holy space defended by the shaman, who will lead the ritual throughout.

Once ingested, what we would call the 'hypnotic' effects of fly agaric-started after about 30 minutes.

In appearance, the intoxication may appear as a natural muscle spasms, followed by a sense of fluidity of the facts and sensory disorientation. Occasionally, there is vomiting, while all the mushrooms can be regurgitated. Paradoxically, however, this often serves to heighten the otherworldly sensations of flight and entry to an 'unusual' space.

The soul, the shaman, and those who catch of this sacrament, is now in communion with the gods.

According to a description Erowid.org, which, perhaps, bridges the gap between the external effects and inward feeling the effects of fly agaric, is that "nerves are highly stimulated and the slightest effort of will produces very powerful effects. If one likes to step over a small stick, he steps and jumps as if the obstacles were tree trunks. If a person is ordinarily talkative, his speech today is always, and he was involuntarily blurts out secrets, fully conscious of his actions and aware of his secret, but unable to hold himself in check. A person who loves dancing dances, and a music-lover sings incessantly. Others run or walk quite involuntarily, without any intention of moving.

Two of the most interesting aspects of fly agaric, is that it retains its effectiveness almost permanently, and its effects can be easily transmitted to others, notably through the ingestion of urine from The first person to eat mushrooms. The same effect can be transmitted to a third, fourth or fifth person in exactly the same way.

In fact, the ability mushroom to act in this manner may be partly at the root of 'Father Christmas' myths Winter rituals observed in the West.

In Shamanic traditions of Siberia, The shaman will ingest fly-agaric trip to the Sky Father and bring back the gift of knowledge and power for his community. Dressed in a warm, fur-lined, ritual costume, with a thick belt hung bells, the magician will make his trip to sundown to consult on this otherworldly spirits. At the time that followed, The shaman will need to urinate and can walk into the forest to do it. Reindeers would then eat urine-covered snow as part of their normal grazing and also be drunk.

'Flying' (drunk) reindeers in a color-borne human (the magician) who control them … The similarities in costume … the Bells and the belt … The red and white mushroom … traveling by air to deliver gifts … all the elements of modern day Father Christmas is there, creating a rather idyllic view of the fly-agaric.

We need to remember, though, that the Amanita has not always been such a 'quiet' reputation. The Vikings, for example, is said to have ritually ingested to enter the 'berserker' state, ready for battle (in fact, the Icelandic name for fly-agaric contains the word 'berserk'), as the Zulus were, according to my wife toxicologist lunch.

Properties and chemistry
One of the first study of fly-agaric was made in 1863, by two German chemists published a book owned by muscarine, a toxic alkaloid which they was isolated from Amanita. For almost a century, their study (who turned out to be wrong) is taken as gospel and muscarine were invalid believe that the main active ingredient of the fly-agaric mushrooms. Various confusions and followed it was not until 1964 that his constituents are very few – and then almost simultaneously by three different laboratories, in Japan, England and Switzerland. Finally, the appropriate compounds were identified as ibotenic acid and muscimol.

Muscimol is the psychoactive substance. A small fraction of ibotenic acid to muscimol was replaced within the human system, following ingestion of the mushroom, and it produces the effects for where fly agaric is known.

Research shows that ibotenic acid will create a hallucinogenic effect on humans, the dosage as small as 50mg. The onset effects can be fast or too slow, ranging from 30 minutes to 2-3 hours, depending on body type, susceptibility, habituation, and the condition of ingestion.

In any case, three hours is usually enough for the full effect is felt, which will then last for 4-8 hours, depending on the dose, and usually include muscle spasms (as if one is actually taking a 'trip' of sorts), visual distortions ('visions'), changed perception hearing ('Hearing voices'), and loss of equilibrium (changed perspective on 'normal reality').

A considerable amount of ibotenic acid is rapidly excreted after the fly-agaric immediately, and remains unaltered in the urine. This adds credibility to the experience of Siberia (including leftover myth Father Christmas) because, after eating the mushrooms, shaman would piss ibotenic acid in his urine and reindeers can ingest it and reprocess it as muscimol ibotenic acid content, making a similar hallucinogenic effects. The animal is then excrete ibotenic acid in his own urine, and the process will continue.

In this way, a 50-100mg dose of ibotenic acid can produce 10-15mg dose of muscimol for up to 10 users, so that one use of mushrooms would certainly be effective in all four or five generation of animal or human ingestion.

Trees and mushrooms, mushrooms and trees
It seems that there is also a symbiotic relationship between the fly-agaric mushroom and Birch tree – the mushrooms grow under the tree – would that account for 'Sacred Birch' tradition in Europe Shamanism.

In fact, in Shamanism, trees, per se, is held as sacred, as the home of the elementals or gateways to the spirit, and connections between different ways of life (such as mushrooms and tree) is revered for the Shamanic belief is that we all – every life form – connected, to each other. This animistic principle of this connection is certainly reinforced for the shaman experience the magical effect of fly-agaric, so that the Birch trees are to be holy by association.

The fly-agaric mushroom still found where Birch is common, including the UK and the Americas. Distinguishable by its bright red dye and white spots, it is best prepared for ceremonial use (according to some Shamanic traditions, as well as the advice of my wife toxicologist lunch) by cutting it into thin strips which are then boiled in milk for 30 minutes or so. The wine was then drunk and emerge the checkered belly. An alternative is to dry the mushrooms and add to vodka, drinking wine-Amanita mixture when the liquid turns orangey-red.

Naturally, the ritual use, fly agaric, should always be taken to a sacred way the purpose of revealing the true spiritual knowledge, and with full respect for its power. To do the other way is simply to engage in 'drug-taking', with all the inherent risk of misuse and the consequences of more people, Zulu-like, might we mere mortals and Western suburbanites might then have to deal at.
